Mount Mercy University is home to one of the United States’ greatest visionary architectural sites, Our Mother of Sorrows Grotto. This grotto exemplifies the early twentieth century Midwestern grotto tradition and is recognized by The National Register of Historic Places and The Smithsonian. With the partnership of The National Endowment for the Arts, Mount Mercy University undertook restoring and preserving the dilapidated grotto. Along with this restoration, they needed a booklet that would be available to grotto visitors. I was tasked with designing this booklet. The booklet had to balance being informative while also being highly visually appealing, emphasizing the textual quality of the grotto.
