Mr Berger: Play House, multimedia installation, 2017

statement

This was a solo show at Mount Mercy University, which reconstructs Mr. Berger’s sitcom-like domestic set including the video series The Magic in Your Mind, Mr. Berger Sweats to the Oldies, hook rugs of Abstract Expressionist paintings, hook rugged home, a wall-less window, and a number of found and fabricated objects. The title has a double meaning, Mr. Berger plays house while this installation is Mr. Berger’s play house, both referencing the 1980’s hit Pee-wee’s Playhouse and many other sitcoms. This installation explored the symbols and tropes that signify “home” in both pop culture and traditional culture.
